M y recent exchange program in Taiwan has been a unique and eye-opening experience. In just a few days, I’ve encountered a blend of old and new, traditional and modern, that has offered me a fresh perspective on culture, design, and everyday life. On the first day, we visited the Taiwan Design and Research Institute (TDRI) and the National Palace Museum. What immediately struck me was the work environment at TDRI. The office was not just functional but beautifully designed, reflecting a deep respect for aesthetics and innovation. The employees seemed genuinely proud of their work, which was inspiring to witness. I was particularly surprised by how much the Taiwanese government values design—a stark contrast to the US, where design often takes a backseat to other priorities in government planning.
